Painting Botanicals: Virtual Class

Join in for a Solstice Handmade’s Virtual Class! You’ll learn the basics of watercolor as well as texturing techniques to learn how to capture your favorite fungi.

Here’s how it works:

-on JUNE 17TH FROM 6-9PM, live class will be help over zoom. This will include time for questions and critique. Class will be recorded and sent to participants so that it may be watched at a later time.

-choose ‘supplies included’ to be mailed/delivered paint, brushes, paper, and a palette. Pickup orders will include a few stems of fresh locally grown Flowers to paint from life! use the code PICKUP at checkout if you would like to save on shipping and pick up your supplies from Creston, Grand Rapids. This code will give you free shipping.

-choose ‘video only’ to use your own supplies to paint along! We will be using Rose Madder, Cad Yellow, and Indigo watercolor paint, canson watercolor paper, as well as 2 sizes of round brushes.

-Everyone will need: water, paper towel, a pencil and eraser, a quarter and jar lid or other round templates to trace that are apx 1in and 3in across. These are not provided with the kit

To start us off, we will walk through and warm up with watercolor basics such as color mixing, tinting, and more-see second photo. We will then use a collection of botanical photos from my hiking excursions for reference to apply these basics. Better yet- hit the outdoors and look for some plants to paint from life with in the days before class! Wet blending and detailing techniques will be our main focus. We will also discuss basics of Identification, as well as examples of natural science illustrators and approaches to composition.
